Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, JUUL Labs continues to assert that its vaping and e-cigarette company did not intentionally market nicotine products to teens and minors. Yet, just like big tobacco, they developed bright, colorful ads, contributing to a nationwide youth smoking epidemic. When JUUL was first introduced to the market, it claimed that it was a healthy alternative to smoking cigarettes that would help people quit smoking altogether. Since then, this claim has been proven to be not only unfounded, but an outright lie. The company’s youth-oriented marketing (social media campaigns and false advertisements) targeted Gen Z youth and teens with its flavorful and fun names, such as Cool Cucumber, Crème Brûlée, Fruit Medley and Cool Mint, only further enhancing the desire to try it.

They have hooked these middle and high school age kids on the potent amount of nicotine found in their JUUL pods. As it turns out, the widespread addiction issue started with a look similar to a USB flash drive and packs a nicotine punch. The liquid in the JUUL pod becomes a vapor, where it can be inhaled, which is why its use often is referred to as “vaping”. A single JUUL pod contains the same amount of nicotine as an entire pack of traditional cigarettes. This design makes it easy for children and teens to keep it hidden and smoke out in the open, even on school properties.

These devices use a liquid that contains not only nicotine, but a mix of glycerol and propylene glycol, benzoic acid, as well as the enticing added flavors. In April 2018, the Journal of Pediatrics published a report about the carcinogenic effects of the flavoring chemicals used in vape juice to provide fruit flavors.

The Food and Drug Administration has received numerous reports of JUUL users, primarily teenagers and young adults, who have become addicted to the devices and even some who have suffered seizures and convulsions as a result of nicotine poisoning and toxicity. At least 42 people have died from lung illnesses linked to vaping, according to the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

North Carolina has accused JUUL of causing an “epidemic” among young people through “unfair and deceptive” marketing practices. The fruit and dessert-like flavors have enticed underage users to buy the product. New York has announced that it is suing the nation’s biggest e-cigarette maker, aka JUUL, saying the company used deceptive marketing practices to reel in young users. California’s lawsuit alleges, among other things, that Juul’s website did not previously adequately verify customers’ ages. On the same day Minnesota announced the suit in December 2019 , Alaska reported its first case of the vaping-related lung disease sweeping the country. Now all 50 states have reported patients with the illness.
